Description

Zenmus X7. Filmmaking on a new level

Zenmus X7. A unique aerial camera for professional photography.

Zenmuse X7 is a unique professional aerial camera equipped with a stabilizer. The CMOS-matrix has an improved dynamic range of 14 steps. The camera has a Super 35 format and is fully designed for flying with the Inspire 2. The X7 captures high quality video content in 6K (CinemaDNG) and 5.2K (Apple ProRes). In addition to single photos, burst photography with a resolution of 24 megapixels at 20 frames per second is provided. The X7 is also unique in its convenient DL mount, which makes changing lenses a breeze. The Zenmuse X7 stabilized camera has an exceptional color system for easy handling of DJI Cinema Color System footage.

Excellent tool

The Zenmuse X7 records cinema-quality footage in 6K at 30fps or 3.9K at 59.94fps uncompressed thanks to the Super 35 sensor. The pixel size corresponds to 3.91 microns, and the matrix diagonal is 26.6 mm. Such indicators significantly increase the photosensitivity, the dynamic range of 14 steps. This figure is more than the Zenmuse X5S, which has a parameter of 12.8 steps. Also note that the X7’s tonal range reaches 9.41 bits at a signal-to-noise ratio of 44 dB.

DL fastening system

The X7 sensor uses thin and reliable connectors made using FSI-Cu technology. This affects the increase in light sensitivity due to the larger angle at which the light hits the matrix. The technology also provides the use of a miniature lens mount. It reduces the weight of the camera to approximately 630g with the lens attached. As a result, the Inspire 2 quadcopter equipped with the Zenmuse X7 is about 4 kg in weight, although in terms of functionality it is not inferior to heavy professional equipment weighing up to 40 kg.

Zenmus X7. DL lenses.

DL lenses

For the X7, special lenses are available (4 options) made of carbon fiber, mounted via a DL connection. Lenses have different focus distances of 16, 24, 35 and 50mm. At the same time, the maximum possible resolution reaches 8K. All lenses are made to work with the X7 camera.

Zenmus X7. More creative freedom.

More creative freedom

DJI has upgraded the CineCore imaging system to version 2.1 to provide more processing options for content shot on the Zenmuse X7. CineCore 2.1 provides support for CinemaDNG and Apple ProRes codecs at 6K and 5.2K resolutions, respectively. Also in the new version, the EI mode has become available, which increases the quality of the video when shooting at different sensitivity levels. This avoids unnecessary noise and the appearance of characteristic artifacts in the image, especially when shooting in low light conditions. The updated software also supports a new color system that provides increased functionality and options during editing.

Zenmus X7. Filming process in a new way.

Filming process in a new way

DJI has developed the latest Cinema Color System, which improves the processing workflow and expands the functionality of filming equipment.

The Cinema Color System includes a D-Gamut RGB color space feature, as well as a new D-Log curve that works with a dynamic range of 15 stops instead of the X5S’s 13. With the new Zenmuse X7 camera, details in both bright and dark areas of the frame are visible in the video material, which allows you to get a wide range of content processing.

The D-Gamut feature captures the entire DCI-P3 color space used in video recording. During aerial photography and video recording, D-Gamut uses significantly more green tones, ensuring rich green gradation.

Also, the function allows you to get natural skin color on the frames, distributing color tones into suitable color zones. Hues change smoothly with 3D-LUT technology, even under conditions of large exposure fluctuations. The function is designed to fulfill the necessary requirements of manual color correction, which allows you to avoid yellowing on the skin without using 3D-LUT and other color management tools. For feature compatibility, DJI is collaborating with image editing software developers to facilitate the adoption of new technologies.

FAQ

1. Is Zenmue X7 gimbal compatible with other quadcopters besides Inspire 2? And can the camera be used separately?

For now, the camera is only compatible with the Inspire 2, but it will soon be available for use with other DJI flight platforms. The camera cannot be used separately.

2. Is Zenmuse X7 compatible with the first Inspire series?

No. Inspire 1 and Zenmuse X7 not compatible

3. What are the main differences between Zenmuse X7 and Zenmuse X5S?

The Zenmuse X7 is a Super 35 camera with a DL lens mount designed for aerial photography. The camera supports 4 lens types with focal lengths of 16, 24, 35 and 50mm.

As for the Zenmuse X5S, it supports 8 Micro 4:3 lenses, some of which require the use of an additional balancing ring.

4. How much better is the Zenmuse X7 in terms of image quality compared to other cameras in the Zenmuse series?

Video on the Zenmuse X7 is shot in 6K at 30 fps or 3.9K at 59.9 fps. The sensor provides a dynamic range of 14 steps. The matrix size is 23.5×15.7 mm and the pixels have a size of 3.91 µm. When taking pictures, 24 megapixels are involved.

5. What’s special about the DL mount?

This type of mount has the effect of reducing the size and weight of the camera, since the length of the mount is 16.84 mm.

6. What lenses are compatible with the Zenmuse X7?

At the moment, 4 DL lenses with F2.8 aperture are suitable for the camera. The 16mm lens is equipped with an ND4 filter, while the rest of the 24, 35 and 50mm lenses are equipped with mechanical shutter speeds up to 1/1000 second.

7. What is the difference between DL and DL-S lenses?

The differences concern the maximum size of the matrix. For DL, this is a full-format matrix, and for DL-S, it corresponds to the Super-35 format. All lenses have a maximum resolution of up to 8K.

8. What are the advantages of a mechanical shutter and how does it work?

It eliminates motion blur and motion blur effects. At speeds greater than 1/1000 s, the shutter is automatically activated, but it can be turned off manually if desired. To date, the shutter functions only for single shots.

9. Can I install third party filters on Zenmuse X7 lenses?

It is possible if the filters, excluding threads, are no more than 4.4 mm thick, have a diameter of 46 mm and weigh from 10 to 12 grams.

10. What drive should I use for Inspire 2?

For simple shooting at low resolutions, a microSD card is suitable, and for large files, it is better to use CINESSD solid-state drives. Such drives do not work without microSD.

11. Where is the footage recorded with the Zenmuse X7?

Video in H.264 and H.265 and photos in JPEG and DNG are recorded on microSD, uncompressed photos and videos with activated CinemaDNG and Apple ProRes keys are recorded on the CINESSD drive.

12. How are the Inspire 2, CINESSD, Zenmuse X7 camera, and activation keys related to each other?

The material filmed on the camera is processed by a powerful CineCore 2.1 processor and, thanks to activation keys, the processor uses CinemaDNG and Apple ProRes codecs, and the material is recorded for storage on CINESSD. The quality of video recording depends on the storage capacity.
