DJI RS 3 Pro Combo – 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer
DJI RS 3 Pro Combo – 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer

DJI RS 3 Pro Combo

Ronin stabilizers have come a long way in a very short time. This is especially evident in their design features. An important role in this was played by introducing a compact one-handed stabilizer in the lineup, equipped with advanced technologies for the production of DJI film production Ronin-S . This stabilizer was positioned as one of the optimal solutions in terms of quality and price for low-budget projects, small film companies and even amateurs.

Ronin RS3 Pro continues this trend. Its arrival is DJI’s attempt to provide all interested users with access to film production equipment that can be used in a wide range of applications, from a basic gimbal to a full-featured solution for big-budget productions, with the addition of many available accessories.

Even the basic version of the Ronin RS3 Pro allows you to use almost all mirrorless and SLR cameras suitable for cinematography. The new stabilizer has many built-in functions and settings, quickly responds to user commands and has a number of other advantages.

For example, the device is compatible with the LiDAR autofocus system, which will please those users who want to use this compact gimbal as a full-fledged filming system. The Ronin RS3 Pro becomes even more attractive when you connect various compatible accessories such as the RavenEye image transmission system or a focus motor.

And now let’s talk about all this in more detail and in order.

What is the DJI Ronin RS3?

The DJI Ronin RS3 Pro is the latest addition to the DJI Ronin gimbal series. As with the previous generation, DJI has released two versions: the advanced Pro and the basic RS3. In the future, there will be more about the advanced version of Pro, although, as necessary, we will say a few words about the base model.

Judging by the looks, there are few differences between the RS 2 and the RS 3 Pro. The compact dimensions of the stabilizers remained common. There are a few small design changes that stand out, like the carbon-fibre brackets made specifically to mount professional cameras like the Canon C70 and Sony FX6. Also in the latest model, the display size has become slightly larger to make it easier to navigate the menu and access new functions.

Drive power, payload performance and battery life on a full charge all remain the same as the predecessor model. Only the weight of the new stabilizer was a little more. But this is due to the presence of more modern electronics, which gives the RS3 more power and functionality, and is also a much wider ecosystem.

How is it better than DJI RS2?

RS 3 has an improved stabilization algorithm compared to RS 2, as well as a large OLED touch screen and automatic axis lock, so you can turn it on with one button. The setup is the same as on any camera system with stabilization.

Enabling Supersmooth mode increases engine torque at the expense of battery life, but ensures smooth shooting. Now the level of complexity of shooting and editing does not affect the degree of comfort of the operator and does not greatly affect the speed of preparing the camera for work.

The presence of an application for a mobile phone greatly facilitates the work. The process of installing it and further preparing for shooting using a smartphone has become very simple. However, the mobile phone app is not required to use the basic functions of the gimbal (it is required to activate the device), so some experts have regarded DJI’s move with its RS 3 Pro as an “anti-function”.

Design features and operation of the RS 3

DJI products have always been unique. Its devices – drones, filming systems – are often not created according to generally accepted rules, but such, for example, Phantom, become cult over time. To a certain extent, this can be said about the DJI Ronin RS3. The new stabilizer matches the quality of the products that came before. Particularly impressive are the composite elements on top of the sturdy handle and base.

When comparing the DJI RS 3 to other compact gimbals such as the WeeBill 3, the RS 3 is still heavier, albeit relatively light compared to some of the larger gimbals. But overall, the DJI RS3 Pro is very different from most other stabilizers on the market. Of course, it has accessories that allow for wireless video transmission and control, but it is part of an ecosystem that is based on the DJI RS3.

Professional-level stabilization at an affordable price

One of the important advantages of the RS3 Pro, even at a basic level, is the ability to operate the gimbal with one hand. Another important advantage is that you can take advantage of additional features as needed and depending on your needs. If you have ideas for shooting from a car or other projects, then you can detach the gimbal handle and install it on a car or connect antennas, among other possibilities. In this sense, the DJI RS 3 is the most flexible and expandable gimbal on the market.

The design and construction features of the new stabilizer are the result of the tremendous work done at DJI, because in order to create such a flexible product, all participants in the development of the model, especially electrical engineers, had to work a lot to solve a difficult task. At the same time, it was possible to ensure that the process of setting up and connecting the stabilizer for an ordinary user is not difficult and does not take much time.

After the basic setup of the gimbal and the connection of stabilization, it is ready to go. Later, other functions can be connected, such as RavenEye and a mobile phone, to achieve wireless video transmission, then you can also use the ultra-bright control display, and so on. Everything is thought out to the smallest detail and very rational.

It is also worth noting another important point. It often happens that a device with a lot of functionality is not used one hundred percent. Even experienced operators are often limited to almost half of the available options. And with RS 3 the same situation. But its creators assumed such a development of events and thought out the design of the gimbal so that the user does not feel the “piling up” of functions and controls.

Automatic axle lock mechanism, payload is larger

Automatic axle lock is one of the important advantages of the new stabilizer. Moreover, this function works immediately after the device is turned off, lowered or transferred from one place to another. And when you need to resume work, the axle is also unlocked automatically. Of course, it is possible to bypass this functionality manually, but it is better not to do this unnecessarily. In addition, in practice, you will see for yourself that the automatic lock / unlock is very convenient.

As for the axle itself and carbon fiber brackets, as already noted, DJI engineers decided to make them a little larger. This is a logical step if the gimbal is to be used with some of the new mid-weight professional cameras such as the Komodo, Sony FX6 and Canon EOS C70 with a full size mechanical lens.

The photo below shows a gimbal with a powerful Fujifilm X-H2S system and a Fujinon 18-120mm zoom.

DJI RS 3 Pro Gimbal Overview

For a standard compact gimbal, these cameras are usually heavy. But design changes made it easy to use the same Canon C100 MKII alongside the DJI Ronin RS3 Pro. In general, one of the advantages of the Pro version can be considered that it is able to work with cameras weighing up to 4.5 kg. Of course, for someone, a one-handed suspension in this case may not be very convenient, but this problem can also be solved.

Touch screen and more

This is another feature that will delight many users. Moreover, the RS3 Pro display has become larger. As a result, it’s now much easier to navigate the camera’s menus and settings, as well as connect an HDMI cable via RavenEye to the gimbal for quick live view on a small screen. You can also now connect video transmission to a mobile device. Note that the RavenEye module can be purchased in a special combo kit or separately. But it’s worth it. Plus, it’s not that hard to figure out how it all works.

As with previous Ronins, the main gimbal is just part of the “story”, part of DJI’s entire Ronin ecosystem. It is, of course, good as a stand-alone product, but accessories add even more functionality and features to it. For example, you can use the RS3 Pro with 4D grips, Master Wheels and Force Pro to control the gimbal and focus.

You can also switch the battery grip so that the system can then be connected to other tripods and holders as a Pro-Grade ecosystem. Equipment such as camera cranes, camera rails, overhead cameras and steadicams can also be used with the stabilizer. As a result, the Ronin RS3 Pro becomes an indispensable cinematographic tool that can be used in productions of any scale.

Less wires and Bluetooth shutter control

As already noted, the weight of the DJI RS3 Pro has increased compared to the RS2. This is due to the introduction of new technologies, the installation of additional modules, including the Bluetooth module, which opens up more opportunities for connection.

For example, you can use this type of wireless connection with some cameras that support Bluetooth. You can connect the Ronin RS3 Pro stabilizer to such a camera in this way. In practice, this, for example, works with a series of Canon cameras, but the list of compatible devices will certainly expand.

Bluetooth and some other “chips” in the RS3 Pro were specially provided to save users’ efforts. Management has become easier and less costly. Creating complex shots has also become much easier, including due to compatibility with wide-angle cameras. It was for this that, as already noted, elongated brackets were created.

In addition to the brackets, the size of the upper base plate has also increased. This made it possible to increase the contact area between the camera and the plate, which was previously requested by users. The larger plate size helps increase friction, preventing cameras from falling when mounted in extreme conditions. In practice, many users have encountered this.

Another step that simplifies the operation of the system is the presence of a physical mode button on the side. With it, you can easily switch from PF and PTF mode to FPV mode with one click without entering the menu system. It is also possible to set the FPV mode to activate the 3D Roll 360, Portrait or Custom functions.

Improved full color touch display and LiDAR focusing

One of the immediately eye-catching features is the new large 1.8 OLED full color screen. It’s about a third larger than the RS2 and makes it easy to switch settings and navigate menus. When RavenEye is connected, you can also stream live video.

The big new addition to the Ronin RS3 is LiDAR focus technology. It can be installed This module is installed on top of the hot shoe of the camera, connected to the DJI Focus Motor (not included) and the RS3 Pro stabilizer. Once connected and calibrated, you can use it to quickly autofocus manual Cine lenses. Because each lens must be calibrated before use, DJI has made sure that up to three preset lens profiles can be saved.

Importantly, along with the LiDAR module, you can take advantage of the new ActiveTrack Pro functionality. It helps to highlight objects on a small screen using a limiting line. The camera then captures them so they don’t disappear from view wherever you move. This functionality is ideal for filming when the operator has to move around objects, take panoramic shots of objects, etc.

Updated Wireless Video Transmission Technologies

The compact image transmission system is almost ideal for many during the shooting process, but DJI has decided to make improvements here, adding professional-level video transmission and monitoring compatibility.

To improve efficiency and noise immunity, the DJI RS3 Pro is equipped with DJI O3 Pro video transmission technology, which is capable of transmitting video signals up to 6 km away. It is fully compatible with the high brightness remote monitor that is known to have appeared with the Ronin 4D. This monitor supports 1080p/60fps live streaming to multiple receivers.

The potential for DJI RS 3 Pro is quite wide, as evidenced by the fact that the device can be used together with a high-brightness remote monitor and external control units. The remote method allows you to install the camera system with a stabilizer on the car or in some other way, so that you can take full control of the gimbal and camera using the monitor and external units. At the same time, advanced functions of the remote monitor provide you with a wide range of creative possibilities and shooting techniques.

Summing up

Of course, this review of the DJI RS3 Pro hardly looks exhaustive, because only a detailed description of individual functions, features of operation and settings, as well as the use of a number of accessories requires a separate article. But in general, we hope you have some idea of the new product, which is intended primarily for professional videographers and allows you to work with cameras, including heavy ones, at a high level. Many innovations in design and functionality will help you get started faster and shoot in a more comfortable environment.

Buy if you are upgrading from the RS 1, the only downside is that the plate has less grip than the RS 2’s plate, I had to buy another plate from small rig other than that, it has been working great.
