However, the company had to give up a number of features in order to achieve a super lightweight device, and Mavic Mini proved to be an ideal model for beginners, but not for experienced pilots or those who wanted something more from their first drone.

It is for these customers that DJI recently released another novelty – Mavic Air 2, the successor to the traditions of the Mavic Air series, launched in 2018. The new model has become a product at the junction of two directions – amateur and professional. And when you consider all the features that this quad comes with (4K video recording at 60 frames per second (FPS), 48-megapixel high-resolution photo mode, etc.), you would think that the Mavic Air 2 costs no less professional Mavic 2 Pro. However, this is not the case, which distinguishes the novelty from the general background of DJI models. Let’s take a look at the new drone in more detail.

More weight – better functionality

Compared to its predecessor in the lineup, the Mavic Air 2 is slightly larger and heavier (570g). Such an “increase” in weight does not cause any inconvenience, because the drone’s rays can be quickly folded for compact storage – for example, to put in your backpack. Of course, you can control the little Mavic Mini without registering it, but the Mavic Air 2 model is in no way inferior to its “colleague” in terms of compactness and everyone can take this copter with them. Compare the dimensions of both models: Mavic Mini dimensions are 160 x 202 x 55 mm , while the Mavic Air 2 measures 183 x 253 x 77mm.

As for the appearance of the DJI novelty, it has a lot in common with the Mavic Pro line – a classic design for this manufacturer. At the same time, this similarity creates the impression that the device looks (and actually works) like a drone of a more expensive class.

If you have any doubts that this drone is not as fast due to the greater weight, do not doubt its abilities. The maximum speed that the Mavic Air 2 can reach is 68 km/h. You can really feel the high-speed capabilities of the copter in the sports mode. It involves more precise control, in which the drone shows a smooth course through the air. This UAV can reach its maximum speed only in sport mode.

But for most pilots, the normal flight mode is more than sufficient, given the balance of speed and response to the pilot’s commands, while the tripod mode offers less fast, but more precise and smooth movements.

The new UAV also proved to be significantly quieter than many drones. What’s most impressive is the powerful battery that lasts for 34 minutes of flight, the longest flight time of any Mavic quadcopter.

Beginners will definitely love the Mavic Air 2’s “smart piloting” features, which will protect the drone from collisions and other emergency situations. The same front and rear obstacle detection sensors we already know from the Mavic Air are still on this drone, but the new version is superior to its predecessor with top-down sensors.

The same goes for the skillful handling of color, although the areas in the shadows still could not get rid of the noise. However, if the shooting takes place on a sunny day, then the result will definitely impress you.

Speaking of other notable improvements to this drone model, we can note the presence of 1080p slow-motion shooting at 120 and 240 FPS, as well as 8K Hyperlapse, which outputs many favorite clips with accelerated video. In addition, the Mavic Air 2 has a ton of shooting modes: Rocket, Circle, Asteroid, and more. These modes have been enhanced by DJI to provide content creators with professional-quality video.

With the Mavic Air 2, DJI has tried to maintain the tradition of equipping its drone models with tools and features that make it easy to create high-quality content. Many attentive observers have noticed how similar the Mavic Air 2 looks to the Mavic 2 series, only in a more compact size. This impressive feature set of the new DJI Mavic Air 2 and rather compact size put it between the “big brother” Mavic 2 and the “little brother” Mavic Mini.

But the comparison with the Mavic 2 is the most interesting. The fact is that the Mavic Air 2 is positioned as a medium-sized amateur drone, but in some respects it actually even surpasses the Mavic 2. Among the advantages of the new quadcopter compared to the Mavic 2, we should immediately note the maximum flight time and the maximum frame rate. when shooting 4K video (60fps vs. 30fps). Being a newer model, Mavic Air 2 also has new smart modes for aerial photography.

These and other advantages prevent the Mavic Air 2 from being positioned as just a “little cousin” of the Mavic 2. In some ways, it can be even cooler. Perhaps this is further proof of the rumors that DJI will soon bring its Mavic 3 to the market. But a reasonable question arises for novice pilots and fans of aerial photography: is it worth the extra money or is it enough to buy a Mavic Mini?

All three drones share a similar design style with subtle lines running the length of the body. All have a mechanism for folding beams – higher front and lower rear. Mavic Air 2 weighs 570 grams, about 15% less than the Mavic 2 family of drones. The Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic Mini have 20MP and 12MP cameras, respectively. In terms of video, the Mavic Air 2 can shoot in 4K at 60fps at 120Mbps, while the Mavic 2 Pro can shoot in 4K at 30fps at 20Mbps. In addition to the new features noted above, DJI has upgraded the Mavic Air 2‘s previous Intelligent Shooting Modes from the Mavic 2 Pro: Spotlight 2.0, Point of Interest 3.0, and most notably ActiveTrack 3.0. The Spotlight 2.0 feature was first introduced on the Inspire 2 drones. It allows the camera to be fixed on the target and kept in the frame, allowing the operator to fully control the movement of the aircraft. Point of Interest 3.0 is used to automatically build a flight route around an object. This time, DJI has tried to improve the surface recognition and dynamic tracking capabilities.

ActiveTrack 3.0 allows the drone to autonomously track an object using 3D mapping technology. New route search algorithms predict the possible movement of an object in order to better position the drone and camera. In this case, the function includes the continuation of the flight in normal mode, even if the object momentarily leaves the frame. In addition, the Mavic Air 2 has the same familiar QuickShots features as the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic Mini. They are known to be pre-programmed flight modes to create special video effects. Mavic Air 2 is equipped with a 3500 mAh battery, thanks to which its maximum flight time can reach 34 minutes. Meanwhile, the battery capacity of Mavic 2 Pro is 3850mAh, but due to the large size, the maximum flight time is 31 minutes. Well, the DJI Mavic Mini, which belongs to the smallest quadcopters, has a battery capacity of only 2400 mAh, although the maximum flight time is 30 minutes. However, it should be noted that all three compared models have a very decent maximum flight time, which indicates that DJI is making a lot of efforts from year to year both to improve power supplies and other components that affect the flight performance of drones.

Data communication system

The new Mavic Air 2 features DJI OcuSync 2.0 technology, which is shared with the entire Mavic 2 series. With the Mavic Air 2, these improvements have increased the effective transmission range to 10 kilometers, while the Mavic 2 and Mavic Mini have the same only 8 km and 4 km respectively.     I’m not a rich man but. Bought two DJI drones and I absolutely love them. Can’t afford the dij FPV but would love to try one out So DJI if you could I would like to get one just to try.
