DJI recently introduced the DJI Inspire 3 and the DJI Mavic 3 Pro – but there is another drone model that could be presented in 2023. We’re talking about the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S, which will be launched as the successor to the DJI Air 2S and could shake up the drone market with new functions, a better camera or a longer signal range. There aren’t any yet Official information about the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S – just a few rumours and the first photos of presumed prototypes are circulating on the Internet.
DJI Air 3 and DJI Air 3S: New camera drone in 2023?
Simultaneously with the presentation of various camera drones, such as the DJI Mini 3 or DJI Mavic 3, DJI has cleaned up the portfolio of consumer drones properly. The entry point is always the DJI mini drones, which include, for example, the DJI Mini 3 or DJI Mini 3 Pro to count. If you like it higher quality, need more functions or need more in terms of camera performance, you can parallel to the DJI Mavic series grasp. In between there is the DJI Air 2S, which the leading drone manufacturer presented in 2022. Since then there has not been a direct successor to the DJI Air 2S – the middle model in the drone portfolio has so far no upgrade and no facelift receive. But the first rumors and leaks indicate that this could change soon – the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S is probably already in the starting blocks.

A DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S could offer these improvements
But what could the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S offer? First of all, it can be assumed that a successor to the DJI Air 2S will be a little more expensive – the price of the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S will probably be somewhere between the DJI Mini 3 Pro and DJI Mavic 3 Classic. A price of €1,000 to €1,300 seems appropriate here. On the camera side, one should expect significant improvements from the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S, after all, even the DJI Mini 3 Pro offers a fairly bright 1/1.3-inch image sensor. You will probably get the DJI Air 3S or DJI Air 3 with a MFT sensor (Micro Four Thirds) equip what the Mid size camera drone from the DJI Mini series. There is already talk in the rumor mill that the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S will be the new Sony IMX472-AAJL could be used – a still quite new 4/3 image sensor, which above all offers a high dynamic range, little image noise and high frame rates. A resolution of 5,280 x 3,956 pixels (20 megapixels) and 120 frames per second at 5K resolution are features that could look good on the new DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S.
Better 4/3 camera, DJI O3+ and faster loading
In addition to the camera, improvements in range or flight time can of course also be expected. The DJI Air 2S relies on DJI OcuSync 3.0 – the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S therefore requires an upgrade to DJI O3+ to be expected, which not only longer ranges and more stable signal transmission, but also a Live View in Full HD or 1080p with up to 60 frames per second. In addition to the improved signal transmission, the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3s could of course also new batteries with more capacity offer so that the camera drone a Flight time of up to 40 minutes could reach. Faster charging technology would be desirable in this context, because the battery of the DJI Air 2S can only be charged with a maximum of 38 watts, while the newer DJI Mavic models already support up to 65 watts.
Obstacle detection, new flight functions and many extra features
In addition to the camera, obstacle detection or battery, the obstacle detection of a new DJI Air 3 model should also be refreshed. One omnidirectional obstacle detection, as offered by the DJI Mavic 3 models, would also be desirable. Such an obstacle detection would also have a positive effect on the flight functions and object detection, so that the DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S could also offer new extra features in terms of tracking functions or creative recording modes. In any case, it will be interesting to see whether DJI will present a DJI Air 3 or DJI Air 3S in the summer of 2023 and what features the latest DJI drone model will bring.
